Harare – An outing to watch a band performing changed his appreciation for music. Until today, he cannot clearly remember the name of the act, except a few resonating vocals from the song.

But for Bright Chisango, that encounter became the turning point in his artistic career.

“I fell in love with music in 1988 when we went to see a band that was performing in my area called Chaona. I don't even know the name of the band till now but I still have one song that they played that day (hanzi muramba chingwa achiti ndoda maintenance),” recalled the upcoming musician.

The earlier experience and exposure would reinforce his love for music as he got hooked up to local musicians, whom he still regard as his motivators that later shaped his profession.

“From there on, I fell in love with music. I grew up listening to Bhundu boys, the late John Chibadura and Leonard Dembo. Not forgetting Leonard Zhakata and Ernest Tanga Sando. Generally, Zimbabwean music influenced me so much. Ernest Sando inspired me a lot,” said Chisango.

It took him two years to venture into the musical world full time, with his initial project coming later in 2005. “I started writing and composing songs in the year 2000. But I started recording my first album called Kajuzi in 2005.”

Born in 1982 Mazowe, the place fame for its iconic orange fruit juice, Chisango calls his genre Valley music: “I derived the name from the coolness of a natural valley between mountains where you find big evergreen trees and a soothing sound from the wind blowing the leaves of the trees.”

He further associates his music to a unique afro jazz, heavily influenced by the late Biggie Tembo, Pastor Charles Charamba and Kireni Zulu. Chisango is currently working on his 15th album called ‘Rairo’ which will be coming out in August this year. To date, he has more than 100 songs under his name.

His greatest moment was when he shared the stage for Blessing Shumba and Freddy Manjalima aka Kapfupi in 2012. Currently, Chisango is focusing on the gospel music genre.

“I am focusing my time on recording new songs, and mainly preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ on pulpit. I will be touring Europe in the near future.”

The singer, songwriter who is an engineer by profession, is happily married to Mejury and the couple are blessed with three boys Christian Emmanuel, Brilliant Michael and Genius.
